Hudson River Community Credit Union (HRCCU) is devoted to its members and the integrity of their financial investments. As part of its overall structure (and a deep desire to remain member centric), a supervisory committee was set in place to always keep members best interests a top priority. The HRCCU’s Supervisory Committee's core purpose is to strengthen all the products and programs within the credit union. The group regularly advises, assists, supports and advocates for credit union members, and it has no legislative, administrative or programmatic authority. It is advisory only in nature, but it is priceless to the satisfaction of HRCCU’s community!The volunteers on the committee each have a long history with HRCCU as members. Each also brings unique knowledge and skills to the committee, augmenting the expertise of the formal board of directors - all in an effort to guide the organization. We recently had the opportunity to sit down with our supervisory committee members and talk about volunteerism and their perspectives on being an integral part of HRCCU as members, as well as serving in a valuable oversight capacity.
Part two: Spotlight on Annie McMahon
HRCCU: How long have you been an HRCCU member, and why did you choose HRCCU for your financial needs?
AM: I have been an HRCCU member for 32 years. It was 1985...I was newly married and new to the area. My husband was already a member, so we kept it going and I joined as well.
HRCCU: How did you become a member of the HRCCU Supervisory Committee, and why was this volunteer position appealing to you?
AM: I have been on the HRCCU committee for five years. At the time, HRCCU had an online ad that I saw while doing my online banking. I was very interested, so I applied. I am a big advocate of volunteering and giving back to the community. In fact, I’m currently active on 13 committees.
HRCCU: What duties and responsibilities are required of HRCCU Supervisory Committee members?
AM: We are responsible for a number of duties, including reviewing the audits to present to the Board of Directors. And ensuring the Credit Union is in compliance with all laws and regulations. Audits cover the total operation of HRCCU, even down to the window tellers. We are reviewing the findings of the audits and managements plans to resolve issues.
HRCCU: What is your professional background (aka…your day job)?
AM: My title is Financial Manager for Warren County. I have 17 years of banking experience, including payroll, teller, audits and branch manager.
HRCCU: What skills and talents do you bring to the committee position, and what additional skills would compliment others on the committee?
AM: I have a banking background, which is very helpful in this position. My fellow committee members have equally valuable expertise, which is comforting to me. Each of us is able to bring something beneficial to the table. Our reports can be extensive, so a background in reporting and analytics would also be an asset. It’s nice to have fresh minds and ideas coming into the committee.
HRCCU: What do you want people in the community to know about the importance of being a part of the supervisory committee and specifically serving on behalf of HRCCU?
AM: The committee is an oversight body and we play an important role in ensuring members money is safe. It’s a good feeling to belong to an organization that cares. People want to be part of something that matters and means a great deal. I’m proud to say I’m on the supervisory committee.
HRCCU: What do you most admire about HRCCU and its impact in the community?
AM: I’m a people person, comfortable with customer service. I’ve always been volunteer-oriented. HRCCU is very involved with the community and does so much to help others, which I really appreciate. I like that they are member-owned. You can walk into any of the HRCCU branches and feel like family.
HRCCU: What would you say to encourage others to become a member of HRCCU?
AM: Try it! You’ll be glad you did. I use three of the HRCCU branches, and I’m always greeted by name. It’s great to be part of a family...I feel like I belong.
