3 Ways to Save on a Halloween Costume

Posted by Katie Koke on Oct 28, 2019 11:00:00 AM

One of the most fun parts of the autumn season is Halloween, and one of the best parts of Halloween is being able to dress up! There’s only one problem: if you’re on a budget a lot of those especially cool Halloween costumes also tend to come with a big price tag. Luckily that doesn’t have to be the case. With a little creativity and thought you can save yourself a couple dollars and make a killer Halloween costume while doing it! Here are 3 ways to save on a costume this Halloween.

  • Raid Your Wardrobe - and Thrift Stores

Thumb through your wardrobe and see if you find anything that might be an easy piece for a costume. Even if you don’t find everything that adds up to a full costume, you can always hit some thrift stores to find inexpensive additions, which means an inexpensive costume opportunity! If you’re trying to use clothes that you already have mixed in with some thrift store finds try to build a costume idea around something fairly simple. For example, like a movie or tv character with a distinct but an easily emulated fashion style!

  • Get Creative

If you’re a little more artistically inclined pick up the scissors and paint. There are a ton of costume possibilities you make with just some cheap household items and an adventurous mind. Dollar stores can really come in handy because they’re great for finding inexpensive materials that you can turn into an interesting costume. 3 of our favorites that we’ve found are a homemade lego costume made out of cardboard and plastic containers, a gum-ball machine using dollar store plastic and some colored balls, and a cactus costume made with cut up plastic straws glued to an all-green outfit.

  • Utilize Face Paint and Makeup

Face paint is affordable and can turn you into a spooky skeleton in no time - and if you already have makeup on hand you might not even need it! Other fun costume ideas you can whip off with just a bit of makeup and face paint are a mermaid, clown, or the grim reaper. There are heaps of youtube tutorials to help you find the look you want. Just do a quick internet search, grab the materials you need, and you’ll be well on your way to costume savings!

With any savings- whether it’s on a Halloween costume or something totally different- you need somewhere to keep your money. HRCCU has a ton of different savings account options with minimum balances as low as $250. Don’t let your savings go to waste. Put your money somewhere you know you can trust!
